What are the problems of Language and Learning?

Problems in Language Learning

     Language learners face so many difficulties mainly because of the negative interference of the mother tongue and cultural differences. The problems of language and learning are discussed below:

  1. Language Transfer: Language transfer refers to the interference of mother tongue in second language learning. Learners apply knowledge from their native language to learn a second language. While this can help in understanding and using the target language, this can hinder the proper internalization of the second language rules, vocabulary, pronunciation etc.

  2. Cultural differences: Learners culture can be a barrier to second or foreign language learning. Cultural differences may cause confusion and cultural misunderstandings. Learners may have problem communicating with target native speakers because of cultural differences.
  3. Implications in the classroom: Teachers must take into consideration the strategies learners use to learn a second language.(a) Learners tend to use their linguistic knowledge of mother tongue. (b) Learners try to transfer their cultural knowledge to make assumption when communicating in the target language.
  4. Lack of curiosity: In language learning attitude can be a key factor in how a student progress. A learner who is keen about the target culture will be more successful in their language studies. The culturally curious students will be more receptive to the language and more open to forming relationships with native speakers.
  5. Rigid thinking: Language learning involves a lot of uncertainty. Students  will encounter new vocabulary daily, and for each grammar rule there will be a dialectic exception or irregular verb. Until native like fluency is achieved, there will always be some level of ambiguity.
  6. A single method: Some learners are most comfortable with the listen and repeat method of language learning. Whereas some need a grammar text book to make sense of a foreign language. Each of these approaches is fine, but it's a mistake to rely on only one.
  7. Fear: It doesn't matter how well a person can write in foreign script, conjugate a verb or finish a vocabulary test. To learn and improve the target language we need to speak. But most of the time people are too shy or fearful in speaking in target language by assuming that they may mispronounce words or do grammatical mistakes.
